As summer comes to a close, the local eateries of Jim Thorpe begin to prepare themselves for the new, but familiar demand of autumn delights. With time to spare before Fall Foliage comes knocking on our doors, there has been a shift in the atmosphere of the downtown scene.
Cafe Arielle
Up the street of Broadway past the Old Jail Museum is a fanciful location that offers an echo to the soul of Jim Thorpe with its modern age of fine art and blooming cuisine. Cafe Arielle offers a menu that is simpler than before, and less formal than their previous menu. While offering Sunday brunch, the menu includes Dutch babies of both sweet and savory varieties such as berries or a mix of veggies. That’s not all, Cafe Arielle has exhibited an original take on children’s menus by providing healthy meals with a story, such as “Barefoot in the Park”, inspired by the late Neil Simon, that is presented as a bed of greens with foot-shaped sandwiches atop, served with carrots and fruit.
Dimmick Memorial Library
The Second Annual Dimmick Chili Cook-off will take place on Tuesday, September 25th at Cafe Arielle from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. The competition includes a variety of participants with proceeds that benefit the library. After a $15 admission, patrons can enjoy the beautiful outdoor venue of Cafe Arielle with an open mic and basket raffle. Anyone interested in participating in the cook-off is welcomed to pick up an application at the circulation desk in the library.
Marion Hose Bar
Featuring a “Happiness Hour” from 4:00-6:00 Monday through Friday, one of the newest drinks to spark interest in the coming season is the Salted Caramel Apple Sangria which could be one of the first tastes of autumn in downtown Jim Thorpe. However, Marion Hose Bar offers more than that. Weeknights promise different specials from Monday’s “Wing Night” of The Coop that promises 20 wings, Wednesday’s “Burger Night,” Thursday’s “Ramen Night,” to Friday’s “Fry-Day” special of loaded fries. They are open daily for lunch at 11:00am, with the exception of being closed on Tuesdays.
Broadway Grille + Underground
There is never a dull Saturday to be had at the Broadway. With a new management team, Broadway recently conducted a makeover of their menu to, as one bartender said, “mold it to the town.” The food has not been the sole focus, either. New pieces of decor line the walls of the restaurant to welcome a different perspective to new and seasoned patrons. The Underground is a hub of nightlife on a Friday and Saturday evening with events every weekend to be sure to entice a crowd. A schedule is posted for events regularly that showcases local bands to DJs, to fit a mood anyone can enjoy.
Notch Eight Craft House
Inspired by a trip to the Fatherland, Notch Eight will have an Oktoberfest weekend from September 20th – 23rd. The menu will feature rotating specials from perogies to bratwurst. Sponsored by Saint Benjamin Brewing Company in Philadelphia, a few beers will be promoted on special with steins. If that does not complete the experience for you, perhaps seeing the friendly staff dressed in lederhosen will. The menu at Notch Eight also changes frequently, enticing locals and tourists alike to try something new.
Purple Green Juice Bar & Cafe
New to the menu at Purple Green, there are two variations to the avocado toast available that include Summer Corn with Lime & Parsley, Tomato Basil & Lemon, and the original Chile and Lime. If savory doesn’t suit your fancy, there are vegan and gluten-free baked goods available for purchase that include scones, cookies, and brownies. The variety of smoothies and juices will satisfy even the pickiest of eaters for something refreshing that includes a healthy pop of energy to keep you moving through the rest of your day. It is becoming a favorite breakfast spot in Jim Thorpe day by day.
Union Publick House
One of the hidden gatherings of Jim Thorpe locals lies across the bridge from the downtown area on Center St. affectionately called “UPH.” The setting appropriately fits those who want to enjoy the creature comforts of “the only dive bar in Jim Thorpe.” It lives up to its name by providing a pool table, over 80 kinds of beer, and even a modern jukebox that will play classic hits to today’s top radio hits. One of the surprising elements that separate UPH from other dive bars is the offering of Sunday brunch. In fact, their menu hardly disappoints with a chance to order risotto cakes as an appetizer and filet mignon cheesesteak to finish your meal.
3 Kids Market & Eatery
Another hidden gem in Jim Thorpe is located on Center Ave., on the hill, that has its own little corner in the neighborhood. After launching a new menu a month and a half ago, 3 Kids Market and Eatery has long been a staple in Jim Thorpe due to the sweet treats it is known for. With rotating baked goods that include biscotti, cookies, kiffles, turnovers, and so much more, it’s easy to satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth. It doesn’t stop there, every Monday you can bet on four different specials that include burgers, pizzas, quesadillas, etc. that rotate regularly. There is also a small selection of grocery items to help in a pinch.
