The vintage atmosphere of a restored bank building to a gangster themed pub transports you back in time to the 1920s.
Bonnie & Clyde Pub and Grill on First Street in Lehighton, owned by Steve and Joyce Mazalewski, offers burgers, entrees, vegetarian dishes, seafood and exotic meats, as well as specialty desserts made daily in-house. The pub has 36 beers on tap, and more than 70 bottles of craft beer, specialty cocktails and a wide variety of local and imported wines.
“One of the most exciting elements of our business is being one of the first businesses to open on First Street in a few years,” said Julie Rambo, bar manager. And since the pub opened, more businesses started opening on the strip.
“We kick started the revitalization that is currently happening on First Street,” Rambo said.
The restaurant has weekly specials such as “industry night” on Mondays, which offers 20 percent off food for all restaurant employees, “traveling Tuesdays” which offers $5.00 upgrades to any entree, discounts on flights, growlers and mixed sick packs. Wednesday is “wine down Wednesday” which offers $10.00 wine flight and $10.00 off fillet mignon and strip steaks. Thursday are steak and shrimp night for $14.50 and live music every Friday night from 7-10 p.m.
Most of the restaurant’s products both food and alcohol are locally sourced.
You can begin your evening with a homemade soup du jour or one pound of free range fresh and crispy wings, Louisiana creamy cheese crab dip or a specialty salad. Next on the menu are decadent entrees such as cedar plank salmon, New York strip steak, twin grilled pork chops, or the restaurant’s famous chicken Carbon County.
Or, opt for a lighter fare dish with a flame grilled specialty burger cooked to your liking, a premium sandwich, or a hand-crafted wrap served with housemade chips. If that isn’t enough, make sure you leave some room for a decadent and/or seasonal dessert like pumpkin creme brulee or a specialty cheesecake.
“We our proud that our poultry is always naturally raised and organic Bell and Evans and we use GMO-free beef patties, as well as organic bison and elk,” Rambo said.
When entering the restaurant, you’re greeted in the foyer with large portraits of the real Bonnie and Clyde on the doors, the large wooden bar is just inside the doors and old wooden casks decorate the tap system. There are a few high-top tables providing additional seating, along with Edison lights glistening off a beautifully pressed metal ceiling.
The former bank’s safe is utilized as the freezer.
Dividing the bar from the dining room is a wall with teller bars made from copper, spread throughout the openings. The main dining room is spacious and located to the right of the bar. There are eight booths, five tables and four high tops.
The booths are decorated with a deep red fabric with gold threading in a paisley tapestry and each booth is adorned with the name of an infamous gangster and a brief history about them.
The restaurant, which employes 32, is open seven days a week. Business hours are:
Sunday through Thursday: 11:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
Friday and Saturday: 11:30 a.m.-11:00 p.m.
“We plan to continue to bring new ideas and fresh, locally sourced food and beverages to Lehighton,” Rambo said.
Bonnie and Clyde’s has something for everyone, a casual atmosphere to kick back and relax, great service and delicious food, along with enough libations to satisfy your palate.
