Things to Do on St. Patrick’s Day

Discover Irish Heritage in the Poconos

A visit to beautiful Jim Thorpe might just be the next best thing to a visit to Dublin. The winding, old world streets are home to modern shops and eateries, and there’s a strong Irish heritage to discover. When the borough was first founded in the early nineteenth century, many Irish immigrants helped build the town and worked in the nearby anthracite coal mines. Some, like James Dolon, rose to prominent positions and built beautiful homes like the The Dolon House, now a bed and breakfast.

Life was a struggle for many early Irish arrivals in Jim Thorpe, then known as Mauch Chunk. A controversial and notorious court trial in the 1870s condemned a group of miners known as the Molly Maguires; their history is memorialized in the Old Jail Museum, open for tours throughout the warmer months.
