More Bicentennial Fun For Mauch Chunk Celebration

While Old Home Week, held last month, its fun reunions, museum programs, tours of the Asa Packer Mansion, Classic Car Cruise, Patriotic Pet Parade and Stay at Home Festival and  fireworks is over, there’s still lots more Bicentennial events in store this year.

The Bicentennial of Old Mauch Chunk Committee is shining a light on the history of the town and its people with a year of reunions including one planned in August for the town’s textile industries, special events, tours and exhibits, genealogical workshops, an oral history project, a Bicentennial Ball, Old Home Week culminating with the American Legion Post #304 Stay at Home picnic and fireworks, Founders Weekend Community Block Party and Cake Walk at Sam Miller Field, Victorian House Tours and more.

On Thursday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m., local historian Vince Hydro will present the second in a two-part series about prominent people in Mauch Chunk’s past at the Dimmick Memorial Library, 54 Broadway.

The Sam Miller Field Community Block Party Bicentennial edition will be held from Thursday, Sept. 13 through Sunday, Sept. 16 with a Switchback replica car, live entertainment, a cake walk, carnival rides, games and more family fun.

Also on Sunday, Sept. 16, the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center will present its Bicentennial Victorian House Tour, featuring more than a dozen properties.

Another major project of the Bicentennial is the Thanksgiving Oral History Project, in which the committee hopes that students and their families will answer questions about their lives in Mauch Chunk/ Jim Thorpe and share the answers and a family photo for inclusion in the Bicentennial booklet to be published in 2019.
