Come October, leaf peepers and festival goers alike flock to Jim Thorpe, the gateway to the Pocono Mountains for its annual Fall Foliage Festival. Sponsored by the Jim Thorpe Tourism Agency (JTTA), the celebration to be held Oct. 6-7, 13-14, and 20-21, showcases the town in all of Mother Nature’s splendor.
Brightly colored trees from Flagstaff, Mt. Pisgah and Bear Mountain surround you, whether you’re shopping the walkable downtown’s more than 40 shops and galleries, taking in live entertainment on one of four stages around the historic district or perusing craft vendors and merchant displays at the Josiah White Park. Train rides on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway are always a favorite of festival goers, with special autumn leaf excursions.
While the county parking lot by the train station, 1 Susquehanna St., fills quickly, additional parking with a shuttle service runs from Mauch Chunk Lake Park, 625 Lentz Trail.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 3 and the Victorian Gothic Steampunk Ball, held at the Mauch Chunk Ballroom, 41 W. Broadway. The fundraiser for the Mauch Chunk Museum will feature a full course dinner buffet, dessert, cash bar, a DJ playing requests and a Thriller Dance-Off contest. Tickets: $65. Plan now to attend the 37th annual Olde Time Christmas in Jim Thorpe celebration. A 2016 Better Homes and Gardens Magazine selection of one of six family friendly celebrations, Olde Time Christmas will be held throughout the month of December with special events on Dec. 1& 2, 8 & 9, 15 & 16.
