Maria Loyd of MABACOL – Artisanal Gifts in Jim Thorpe would like to thank Stephen Bretzik, owner of Whitewater Rafting Adventures in Nesquehoning, for his donation of life vests to her NATIVE SCHOOLS SAFE TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM. Here are a few pictures of kids in Colombia commuting to school each morning in open ocean waters. The boats contain no life vest jackets and the crossing can be very dangerous.
These island village schools also use these boats to travel to the closest land to buy school supplies and other necessities, or to transport teachers coming from the mainland. Maria and MABACOL – Artisanal Gifts donate substantial time and money annually to support native schools in her homeland. It is her way to show appreciation to the tribes for what they have taught her, and help to ensure these native cultures thrive.
A big thank you to John Thorpe for helping Maria reach her goals of investing in this program. Also special thanks to our local newspaper, The Current, for helping promote community action like this. The children now do not have to wait until Maria’s 2020 Giving Back Donation Program to be safe!
