In connection with the Mauch Chunk Bicentennial, the Mauch Chunk Museum is holding the 2018 Jim Thorpe Bicentennial Victorian House Tour.
The Tour is scheduled for Sunday September 16th from 12 to 4 (short tours of the Asa Packer Mansion after 4 pm are part of the package). Prices are $17 per person in advance and $20 on the day of event. We are most interested in having our Carbon County residents, especially those who have not yet experienced the town’s Victorian grandeur, its homes, and special places, avail themselves of this opportunity.
As during past tours, your tour booklet will serve as your pass and guide to the sites. It will have a map of the sites and each site will have its own page and picture. The booklet also contains articles regarding the beginning of the town as well as a summary of the lives and contributions of the two most prominent men in the town’s 18th century. Additionally, the fascinating story of the challenges in the early transportation of coal to the market place will be presented.
The tour booklets will be available on the day of the event at the Mauch Chunk Train Station. Patrons who buy their ticket in advance will receive a voucher coupon which can be presented at the Train Station for their booklet. As always, the booklet will become a collector’s item. Parking for the event will be available at the Train Station Parking Lot and all sites will be within walking distance.
At present we have a 20 sites on the tour, so come early. It is a self-guided tour (sites will sport a small flag and there will be pictures in the tour book) and if one site is crowded, you can go on to the next and come back later. And after a long day on tour, have something to eat at one of the restaurants featured in the book’s advertisement section. And for members of the Mauch Chunk Museum, there’s a $5 discount on your tour!
