Race Street Run Set For July 3 in Downtown Jim Thorpe

After a year’s hiatus due to pandemic restrictions, the Race Street Run is back! This year’s event will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2021. This is actually a dual event, two races in one, with a 4 mile and a 15 kilometer distance. The 15K event begins at 8:30 AM followed by the 4 miler at 8:45.

The course begins at the Carbon County Court House on Broadway, then travels to West Broadway, the former “Bus Road” and then to the Switchback Trail. The 4 mile participants have a turn-around on the Switchback Trail, just before the Jim Thorpe water treatment plant.  The 15K race continues on the Switchback Trail to the Mauch Chunk Lake where there is a turn-around at the park entrance. Both races re-trace their routes back to West Broadway and finish on Race Street in front of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Jim Thorpe Police will be in charge of traffic control.

Broadway will be closed from the Court House to the Opera House for the start of the race. West Broadway and Lentz Trail will be closed from the Opera House to Coal Street from 8:30 AM until 10:30 AM for the safety of the runners.  Race Street will also be closed for the same time period. Due to the closure of Race Street, access to High Street will be from the west end of the street only.

Proceeds from the race will benefit St. Mark’s & St. John’s Episcopal Church with the money being earmarked for use in purchasing the audio and video equipment needed to enhance the parish’s Sunday morning webcasts on Facebook.

Online pre-registration for the event is strongly encouraged as the combined field for both races is being limited to 150 persons and there will be a limited number of registration kiosks available on race day.
